Abstract

Education has evolved around the centuries from the traditional Gurukul system to the new age digital online learning. There has been great development in the teaching methodology in the 21st Century and also in the teaching pedagogies  and curriculum. There has been a paradigm shift from teacher centric teaching to student centric teaching. Various curriculum theories have been published since 20th century and also debated in the interest of  educating students in the best manner. This objective of this article is to capture the evolution of  higher education and discuss the future challenges in 21st century. This study is based on government and private sector has gone up manifold all over the world and its important to know if the quality education takes the front seat than revenue. This study also explores the Universities and Ministry of education focus on quality education in India. The study is done based on Secondary data and the changing role of  higher education is captured to gain insight on how the education system is progressing in general and around the globe and in particular in India. The number of Universities are increasing in the 21st Century and the teaching methodologies are also changing with advent of Information and communication technology(ICT).
